A lot of people are doing online shopping because it is now easier and more convenient than ever. Find out how you can protect yourself when you make your purchases online in this article.
When you are doing your online shopping you may be concerned about protecting the details on your credit card. There are some simple steps you can start taking right away to make sure that your card stays safe.
Online shopping – keeping your card save
Shopping on the Internet is becoming increasingly popular and will continue to grow in popularity for quite awhile. You can buy almost anything online nowadays, but shopping in this manner also has its fair share of risk. You are taking a chance if you send the details of your credit card into cyberspace to a company that you’re not sure about. Sometimes it can be very difficult to know which companies are trustworthy and which ones you should not send your details to.
Every time you order something on the Internet you are running the risk that you will never receive the items that you paid for, and when such a scenario happens, you will be left wondering what happened to the personal information that you sent as well.
Here are some simple steps you can use to minimize your risk when you do online shopping.
1. Look for a complete address, phone number and business number in Australia before sending over any of your credit card details. If you do run into any kind of problem, at least you will have their contact information. Most companies that are on the up and up have no problem giving out such information. In fact, a reputable company wants to give out all of its contact information to get more business.
2. Check out the shop’s privacy policy, complaints procedures and terms and conditions. Also ensure that the company has a secure checkout before making your purchase.
3. Investigate the company with the Australian Securities and Investments Commission site if you suspect that this company is not completely trustworthy. Their website is available at www.asic.gov.au. You can also run a check through Google and look for any consumer complaints associated with that business.
4. Never tell anyone your credit card PIN or password, and make sure that you always check your statements when they come in at the end of the month. If you see anything suspicious you can contact your credit card company immediately to report it.
It can be more difficult if you are doing your online shopping internationally. In this case you will have to contact that country’s consumer affairs organization if you run into any problem.
Your rights as a consumer are the same for any purchases you make online as they are for any made at a traditional shop according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission. You have the same consumer protection shopping online, so your shopping should be treated the same way as your traditional shopping. Print out a copy of your receipt to have on hand anytime you make a purchase. This will give you protection in case you have a problem with fraudulent or undelivered merchandise.
There is no reason why you should not continue doing online shopping, but it just makes sense to make sure that you are doing it safely and that you are protected. Follow the steps above to make sure that your shopping is as safe and enjoyable as possible.
